A Recap of REASONS: Conversations on Science and Faith

This past weekend, The Woodlands, Texas became a hotspot for intelligent design and science/faith scholarship. Dr. Stephen C. Meyer, Dr. William A. Dembski, and Dr. John G. West headlined the REASONS conference, an educational event sponsored by Faith Bible Church and Houston Baptist University’s School of Christian Thought. Discovery Institute was on-site, offering information on programs, resources, and involvement.

Dr. Stephen C. Meyer’s lectures included:

  • “What is Intelligent Design?”
  • “Darwin’s Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design”
  • “The Return of the God Hypothesis

Dr. William A. Dembski’s lectures included:

  • “The Scientific Case for Intelligent Design”
  • “The Theological Case for Intelligent Design”
  • “Information and the End of Materialism”

Dr. John G. West’s lectures included:

  • “The Cultural Impact of Darwinian Evolution”
  • “The Magician’s Twin: C.S. Lewis on Science, Scientism, and Society”

In addition, Houston Baptist University faculty members presented on a range of topics:

  • “Cosmological Fine-Tuning and the Case for Intelligent Design” by Dr. Bruce Gordon
  • “Quantum Physics and the Providence of God” by Dr. Bruce Gordon
  • “Metaphor and Meaning: The Role of Imagination in Communication about Science and Faith” by Dr. Holly Ordway
  • “Stealth Secularism in the Classroom: Evolution in the Arts and Humanities” by Nancy Pearcey, M.A.
  • “Darwinism and Ethics: Arguing for Sexual Truth in a Secular Age” by Nancy Pearcey, M.A.
  • “Adam and Eve: Fact or Fiction?” by Melissa Cain Travis, M.A.

(Many of the sessions mentioned above were video or audio recorded, and will be made available on the Faith Bible Church website within a few weeks.)

During the course of the event, Dr. Holly Ordway gave an informational seminar on the M.A. Apologetics program at Houston Baptist University. This fall, the program will be available both on-campus and 100% online.

Illustra Media was on-site, providing a variety of intelligent design and apologetics DVDs, and the IDEA Center provided literature about their college campus chapters. Conference attendees were treated to an excellent coffee bar, provided by a local favorite, Right*eous Bros Coffee Roasters and several wonderful lunch vendors.

The weekend was a smashing success (I’m still feeling the aftershocks). The sessions were well-attended and feedback on speakers and their material has been very positive. Already I am seeing signs of significant intellectual and spiritual impact as I have conversations with folks who attended the conference. I’m also receiving a steady stream of emails asking for book, article, and curriculum recommendations.

reasonsconf2014_180I cannot end without saying a few words about the crowning event of the entire weekend: Dr. Stephen Meyer’s Sunday morning message, “The Return of the God Hypothesis.” Dr. Meyer delivered, with masterful precision and charming wit, a profoundly compelling scientific and philosophical case for the existence of God. It was at once  intellectually satisfying and spiritually affirming. His closing words, referring to Romans 1:20, still echo in my mind:

“We see that St. Paul is correct, and Richard Dawkins is wrong. Q.E.D.”

<thunderous applause>
